Into a new season
I’m not alone to feel that we are in a transitional period of time. As zoom teaching slowly coming to an end or pause, I prepare to welcome a first “in person-rehearsal” home. I’m performing more, I truly appreciate all calls! Somehow they tend to fall on the same date and I’m torn when I have to say no (remember that feeling?) Some people have asked me if I play many kinds of music. Answer is yes, because people I love to play with play different kinds of music. I do better when music leaves room for spontaneity, because I feel things differently everyday. Though I don’t feel entitled to represent any tradition of music, I want to say that it’s possible to find myself while respecting the tradition and without pretending to be someone else. I still need lots of help from those who mastered and in practice longer to gain knowledge, and I can’t thank enough for their generosity and patience. One thing I can promise is that I’ll always do my best. I’m working on allowing myself the same openness and characterization in my own project, and can’t wait to tell you more about it soon. I look forward to collaborating, performing, recording, traveling and sharing all that I have musically. - yayoi
